Questions and Answers about the Volunteer Center

 

What is a Volunteer Center?

The Center brings resources together. It has four core functions:

  1. Connect any person or group to non-profits

  2. Build capacity of effective volunteering

  3. Promote volunteerism

  4. Participate in strategic plans to mobilize volunteers to strengthen communities

How long has the Volunteer Center been in existence?

The Volunteer Center was developed by the United Way of Greater McHenry County in 1988.

How can I donate to the Center?

Checks should be made out to Not-For-Profit Resources (fiduciary parent of the Center) or click here to donate online

What is the service area of the Volunteer Center?

Our Volunteer Center serves only McHenry County programs and volunteers.

What are Member Organizations?

Member Organizations are programs that help make McHenry County a better place to live. They are either nonprofit or government organizations. Each Member completes a registration form and must be approved before listing their volunteer needs on our website. Click to view the list

What causes do Member Organizations cover?

Our Members are sheltering the homeless; feeding the hungry; mentoring and providing care for children; helping seniors say safe in their homes; looking after abandoned animals; caring for those with physical and mental challenges; looking after our environment, educating the community; providing cultural experiences; tutoring; providing healthcare and resources; and much more - all making McHenry County a better place to live.

How can I volunteer?

If you are not comfortable or have difficulty using the online resources schedule an appointment with the Center. We can meet with you in person to help identify a Member Organization that may be a good match for you. Our number is 815-344-4483.

What do I do when I find a volunteer need I am interested in?

Following each volunteer need posted is a link. Just click on the link and complete the form. The information on the form is sent to the organization. The organization will then contact you.

How long does it take for a Member Organization to contact me once I have completed the interest form?

Once you complete the interest form. The Organization should contact you within one week. If after one week you have not heard anything please contact the Volunteer Center. We will follow up with the Organization and help get you connected.

Can anyone post volunteer needs?

Only approved Member Organizations can list volunteer needs on our website.

How does an organization become a member?

Organizations wishing to join the Volunteer should visit the Nonprofit Resources page.

Can anyone post items on the McHenry County Community Calendar?

Yes, anyone can post their events on the calendar.
