19062   National Alliance for Mental Illness McHenry County NAMI Program Educator: Family-to-Family Course  Location: McHenry   60050 Description: The Family-to-Family course is a 12-class course designed for family members of individuals with severe mental illnesses, taught by people who have lived through it. The course is taught using a co-leader model, with 2 trained family members. Family-to-Family teachers will also serve as key participants in the planning process involved in outreach, publicity, and hospitality. To meet the criteria to teach, educators must have good communication skills; welcome the mission to help other families in a big way; be willing to master the basic biology of the major mental illnesses and the medications used in treating them; and be a member of NAMI. 19061   National Alliance for Mental Illness McHenry County NAMI Program Educator: Basics Course  Location: McHenry   60050 Description: The Basics program is a six-class course designed for parents and other caregivers of children and adolescents living with mental illnesses. The NAMI Basics course is taught using a co-leader model, with trained teachers. To meet the criteria to teach, Basics educators must be: the parents or caregiver of individuals who developed the symptoms of mental illness prior to the age of 13 years; familiar with the emotional issues families face and comfortable sharing their own feelings regarding difficult life situations; willing to participate in an intensive weekend training on how to teach the curriculum; willing to commit to course participants, the co-leader, and NAMI to complete the 15-hour course once it begins; a member of NAMI.   When does the volunteer need take place?  Ongoing    Ongoing?        One-time-only?   Who would be great for this opportunity? 19060   National Alliance for Mental Illness McHenry County Suppor Group Facilitator  Location: McHenry   60050 Description: The support groups facilitators lead weekly or monthly 90-minute sessions of structured sharing and discussion for (1) people dealing with mental illness or (2) their caregivers. These groups provide a place that offers respect, understanding, encouragement, and hope. Requirements to be a facilitator include: good communication skills, lived experience with mental illness and willingness to share it, membership in NAMI, and a training conducted over one weekend.
