16531   McHenry County Conservation District Native Plant Seed Collection Volunteer

Location: Richmond   60071

Description: McHenry County Conservation District's Natural Resource Management Department is looking for volunteers to collect seed from over 50 native prairie plant species found on District sites throughout McHenry County. Seed collected from local sites preserves local genotypes and has a greater chance of surviving in restoration projects, because it is adapted to our region's climate and soils. The MCCD plant ecologist will lead training and seed collection efforts. Potential seed collectors should have an interest in plants and natural plant communities, enjoy outdoor field work, and be able to work independently. Volunteers will gain plant identification skills.

When does the volunteer need take place?  Volunteer seed collectors are needed weekdays from August through October.

Location: Alden   60033

Description: McHenry County Conservation District's Site Stewards need your help in restoring habitat at Alden Sedge Meadow South, a conservation area located at the headwaters of the Nippersink Creek on Rt. 173 between Harvard and Hebron. Worday activities may include removing invasive plants, stacking brush, as well as collecting and sowing native plant seed. Beginners are welcome, and training is provided. You're invited to join the Site Stewards at the end of each session for an interpretive hike.
