The Senior Companion Program matches up carefully screened volunteers to senior citizens in McHenry County. An interview is conducted on an interested volunteer in order to get to know their interests, hobbies and preferences on location and gender. Then, a search is made to match up the volunteer to a senior who is lonely, socially isolated and wants positive social interaction. Volunteers need to be communicative, patient, senior-friendly and willing dedicate at least one hour a week visiting their assigned senior. This program helps pave the way for genuine friendships to grow.

The volunteer opportunity takes place within the senior's home, so the volunteer will need transportation. If both participants want to go outside the home to socialize (go to lunch or shopping) that is taken into consideration when making a match.
