Description: We are looking for adult volunteers who would like to be Cub Scout leaders with Pack #134. Pack #134 was started in January of 2006 and has 10 scouts grades 1-5. These scouts all come from low-income families, and many come from single parent households that makes it difficult for the parents to dedicate a lot of time to planning and facilitating pack activities. We need adults (male or female) who would like to serve as adult Cub Scout leaders.
When does the volunteer need take place? This would be a large and relatively long-term commitment, that would require the volunteer to spend time planning activities, tracking advancements, etc. as well as facilitating pack activities. Much of the work could be done on their own time.

Location: McHenry 60051
Description: The Senior Companion Program matches up carefully screened volunteers to senior citizens in McHenry County. An interview is conducted on an interested volunteer in order to get to know their interests, hobbies and preferences on location and gender. Then, a search is made to match up the volunteer to a senior who is lonely, socially isolated and wants positive social interaction. Volunteers need to be communicative, patient, senior-friendly and willing dedicate at least one hour a week visiting their assigned senior. This program helps pave the way for genuine friendships to grow.
When does the volunteer need take place? The volunteer opportunity takes place within the senior's home, so the volunteer will need transportation. If both participants want to go outside the home to socialize (go to lunch or shopping) that is taken into consideration when making a match.

Description: A Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) is a trained volunteer appointed by the juvenile court judge to provide objective, factual information in the best interests of a child who is involved in an abuse or neglect case in the court system. CASA volunteers are ordinary adult citizens. No special or legal background is required. Volunteers are screened closely for objectivity, competence and commitment.

Description: The Basics program is a six-class course designed for parents and other caregivers of children and adolescents living with mental illnesses. The NAMI Basics course is taught using a co-leader model, with trained teachers. To meet the criteria to teach, Basics educators must be: the parents or caregiver of individuals who developed the symptoms of mental illness prior to the age of 13 years; familiar with the emotional issues families face and comfortable sharing their own feelings regarding difficult life situations; willing to participate in an intensive weekend training on how to teach the curriculum; willing to commit to course participants, the co-leader, and NAMI to complete the 15-hour course once it begins; a member of NAMI.

Description: The Family-to-Family course is a 12-class course designed for family members of individuals with severe mental illnesses, taught by people who have lived through it. The course is taught using a co-leader model, with 2 trained family members. Family-to-Family teachers will also serve as key participants in the planning process involved in outreach, publicity, and hospitality. To meet the criteria to teach, educators must have good communication skills; welcome the mission to help other families in a big way; be willing to master the basic biology of the major mental illnesses and the medications used in treating them; and be a member of NAMI. One’s own lived experience as a family member, and wanting to teach other families, are the most important qualifications for the job.

We supply refurbished computers for senior citizens to practive the computer skills they learn from the classes taught at the Senior Center. I need assistance picking up computers from the refurbisher's home in McHenry from time to time. In addition, we occasionally receive requests from seniors who need the computer dropped off at their home and/or set up for them. Must be physically capable of picking up computer.
