Description: The Transportation Program at Senior Services provides rides for seniors to need based appointments such as doctor visits, dialysis, groceries, etc. The necessity for this program is outweighing our volunteers - particularly for seniors residing in the McHenry area. We need volunteer drivers to lend a helping hand in transporting seniors to these necessary appointments. Mileage reimbursement is also available for volunteers. Volunteers need to be age 18+.

Location: McHenry   60051

Description: The Senior Companion Program matches up carefully screened volunteers to senior citizens in McHenry County. An interview is conducted on an interested volunteer in order to get to know their interests, hobbies and preferences on location and gender. Then, a search is made to match up the volunteer to a senior who is lonely, socially isolated and wants positive social interaction. Volunteers need to be communicative, patient, senior-friendly and willing dedicate at least one hour a week visiting their assigned senior. This program helps pave the way for genuine friendships to grow.   

When does the volunteer need take place?  The volunteer opportunity takes place within the senior's home, so the volunteer will need transportation. If both participants want to go outside the home to socialize (go to lunch or shopping) that is taken into consideration when making a match.

Description: A Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) is a trained volunteer appointed by the juvenile court judge to provide objective, factual information in the best interests of a child who is involved in an abuse or neglect case in the court system. CASA volunteers are ordinary adult citizens. No special or legal background is required. Volunteers are screened closely for objectivity, competence and commitment.  

When does the volunteer need take place?  This is an on-going need with training provided 3-4 times per year (view website for upcoming training opportunities). The next training will begin 9/22/08. Volunteers must fill out an application and participate in an interview prior to being accepted into the training class.
