18257   Big Brothers Big Sisters of McHenry County, Inc. mentors needed 

Location: Cary   60013

Description: Big brothers are needed to provide one to one friendship, guidance and social activities to a boy between the ages of 6 and 14 residing in McHenry County.  

When does the volunteer need take place?  You meet with your Little Brother between 2 and 4 times per month when it is convenient for you and your Little which is usually on weekends, late afternoon or evenings. A minimum of a one year commitment to your Little is also required.

18375   CASA of McHenry County Volunteer Child Advocates 

Location: Cary   60013

Description: A Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) is a trained volunteer appointed by the juvenile court judge to provide objective, factual information in the best interests of a child who is involved in an abuse or neglect case in the court system. CASA volunteers are ordinary adult citizens. No special or legal background is required. Volunteers are screened closely for objectivity, competence and commitment.  

When does the volunteer need take place?  This is an on-going need with training provided 3-4 times per year (view website for upcoming training opportunities). The next training will begin 9/22/08. Volunteers must fill out an application and participate in an interview prior to being accepted into the training class.

18547   McHenry County PADS Shift Volunteers 

Location: Cary   60013

Description: Volunteers will staff the McHenry Country PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) Emergency Monday Night Shelter at Saints Peter and Paul Church in Cary. Volunteers will perform various duties depending upon his/her assigned shift that may include: setting up the site, greeting guests, helping to serve meals, socializing with guests, etc.  

When does the volunteer need take place?  October through April. Monday evenings @ 6:30 p.m. through Tuesday mornings @ 7 a.m. Shifts are divided as follows: Shift 1: Monday 6:30-11:00 p.m. Shift 2: Monday 11:00 p.m. - Tuesday 3:00 a.m. Shift 3: Tuesday 3:00 - 5:00 a.m. Shift 4: Tuesday 5:00 - 7:00 a.m.

Description: Senior friendly, compassionate volunteer needed for 87 yr old senior gentleman living alone. He is very conversational and has a strong love of folk music. Would like a visitor musically inclined. He plays some guitar, also likes art. Would really enjoy getting out of house to library, play horseshoes, go for a walk, go to lunch. Female companionship would be nice, afternoon visits best. Wants to get out not just sit and talk in home. Nice, eccentric sort of man! Volunteer must complete application, interview and background process. Volunteer commits to visit senior at least once a week for a minimum of one hour.
