Description: The walkathon will take place at Veteran Acres Park in Crystal Lake. Volunteers are needed the day before (October 1) to prepare the site and on the day of the event for a variety of services: set up equipment, mark the route with signs, register attendees, monitor walk route, man refreshment stations, help with activities, take photographs and obtain photo releases, take down signs and equipment, and clean up.  

When does the volunteer need take place?  Saturday, October 2, 2010: set up starts at 7:00 a.m.; registration starts at 9:00 a.m.; Walk starts at 10:00 a.m. and runs to about 1:00 p.m.

19113   McHenry County Conservation District Habitat Restoration Workdays

Description: Here's a three-hour drop in opportunity that doesn't require advance registration and is perfect for MCC Promise students. If you’re wild about nature and enjoy working with people who are enthusiastic about preserving the environment, you’re a “natural” to help Conservation District site stewards to restore habitat at various conservation areas in McHenry County. As a volunteer, you’ll assist with seasonal restoration tasks, such as cutting and stacking invasive brush, removing non-native vegetation, and sowing native plant seed. Conntact the MCCD Volunteer Coordinator for a list of upcoming restoration days at a conservation area convenient to you. No experience is necessary – training is provided. Wear sturdy footwear and clothing appropriate for outdoor work and weather conditions. No sandals allowed. Tools are provided. Bring work gloves and safety glasses if you own them, plus drinking water, insect repellent, hat and sunscreen, as needed.

Description: We are looking for retired, current, or job-seeking business professionals who would be willing to set up appointments with our WIA-eligible customers to conduct one-on-one mock interviews, resume critiques, and basic computer skill assistance. Additionally, for one or more of the following group activities: Facilitation of a networking group, facilitation of a computer basics workshop, a presentation of one aspect of the job search process (sharing their expertise), and/or a presentation of any topic - based on their personal knowledge - that directly impacts the job search process. AND ... We are looking for Promise scholarship students who would be willing to set up appointments with our WIA-eligible customers to conduct one-on-one consultations regarding social networking (i.e. helping them get set up – in a professional job search capacity- on LinkedIn and Facebook) and for possible one-on-one basic computer skills sessions. Additionally, we are seeking individual whos would be willing to facilitate a 2 to 3 hour Computer Basics Workshop once or twice monthly.

Description: Woodstock Early Learning Center Children’s Toy & Equipment Resale will be held on Saturday November 13th from 10am-2pm. The sale includes hundreds of gently-used children’s toys and equipment such as games, stuffed animals, video tapes, cassettes, software, cribs, toddler beds, strollers, breast pumps, infant accessories, dress-up clothing/accessories, halloween costumes, sporting equipment and much more. The sale will be held at the Woodstock Early Learning Center, 350 Christian Way in Woodstock. Proceeds from the sale will support programming at the Woodstock Early Learning Center, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization.

19062   National Alliance for Mental Illness McHenry County NAMI Program Educator: Family-to-Family Course

Description: The Family-to-Family course is a 12-class course designed for family members of individuals with severe mental illnesses, taught by people who have lived through it. The course is taught using a co-leader model, with 2 trained family members. Family-to-Family teachers will also serve as key participants in the planning process involved in outreach, publicity, and hospitality. To meet the criteria to teach, educators must have good communication skills; welcome the mission to help other families in a big way; be willing to master the basic biology of the major mental illnesses and the medications used in treating them; and be a member of NAMI. One’s own lived experience as a family member, and wanting to teach other families, are the most important qualifications for the job.

Description: The Basics program is a six-class course designed for parents and other caregivers of children and adolescents living with mental illnesses. The NAMI Basics course is taught using a co-leader model, with trained teachers. To meet the criteria to teach, Basics educators must be: the parents or caregiver of individuals who developed the symptoms of mental illness prior to the age of 13 years; familiar with the emotional issues families face and comfortable sharing their own feelings regarding difficult life situations; willing to participate in an intensive weekend training on how to teach the curriculum; willing to commit to course participants, the co-leader, and NAMI to complete the 15-hour course once it begins; a member of NAMI.

We supply refurbished computers for senior citizens to practive the computer skills they learn from the classes taught at the Senior Center. Description: The Senior Companion Program matches up carefully screened volunteers to senior citizens in McHenry County. An interview is conducted on an interested volunteer in order to get to know their interests, hobbies and preferences on location and gender. Then, a search is made to match up the volunteer to a senior who is lonely, socially isolated and wants positive social interaction. Volunteers need to be communicative, patient, senior-friendly and willing dedicate at least one hour a week visiting their assigned senior. This program helps pave the way for genuine friendships to grow.   

When does the volunteer need take place?  The volunteer opportunity takes place within the senior's home, so the volunteer will need transportation. If both participants want to go outside the home to socialize (go to lunch or shopping) that is taken into consideration when making a match.
